Yekaterinburg (Russian: Åêàòåðèíáóðã, also romanized Ekaterinburg or Jekaterinburg, formerly Sverdlovsk) is a major city in the central part of Russia, the administrative center of Sverdlovsk Oblast. Situated on the eastern side of the Ural mountain range, it is the main industrial and cultural center of the Urals Federal District.

Yekaterinburg, formerly Sverdlovsk  is a major city in the central part of Russia, the administrative center of Sverdlovsk Oblast. Situated on the eastern side of the Ural mountain range, it is the main industrial and cultural center of the Urals Federal District. 
Climate: It is surrounded by forests, mainly taiga, and small lakes. The winter lasts for about 5 months — from November until the middle of April — and the temperature fall rarely lower than minus 20 to minus 25 degrees Celsius. The summer on the Urals is short and lasts an average of 65-70 days with an average temperature of 18 degrees Celsius. Due to the city's location "behind" the mountain range and different winds, the weather is quite changeable from day to day and from year to year. 
 
Architecture and sights:
 
Due to its rich history the city has lots of things to see.
The date of birth of Yekaterinburg is considered in 1723, when came into operation a plant Crude steel.
• The main factory building - «Plotinka» on Iset River - keep up to date, and today is the Sites of the city. The preserved building is included in the Museum of the History of Architecture and Industrial Technology Urals - one of the most interesting museums in Russia.
• Church on the Blood - built in 2003 at the site of the execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family. 
• QWERTY Monument, (On the river bank near metro station ploshad' 1905 goda.). Easily one of Russia's weirdest attractions is the gargantuan keyboard monument in this city. Big white stones rise from the earth, and as you approach, you see engraved upon them, words like "Q" and "SHIFT." 
• Circus, (Near the metro station Cirk). Richly ornamented building which hosts all sorts of circus shows. Nearby is the abandoned television tower. 
• Ural State University, (To the east from 1905 square along Lenin avenue). It's a wonderful building situated in a neighborhood full of beautiful old buildings. Makes for a pleasant stroll in the direction of Square of 1905. 
• Ural State Technical University, (Take trams 4, 8, 13, 15, 18, 22, 23 or buses 5, 10, 50, 50a to UGTU). Another wonderful building. Alma mater of Boris Yeltsin.
• Opera and Ballet Theatres. There are many theatres situated in the inner city around Square of 1905. For ticket information you might consult with the Ekaterinburg Tourist Information.
• Shirokorechenskoye Kladbishche Cemetery, (Take buses 14, 22, 24, 37ê, 048, 69 to Kontrol'naya). This is the infamous "Mafia cemetery" where there are dozens of graves ornated with big life-size images in stone of former Mafia members.  edit
• Ledovyj Gorodok, (Right on Ploshad' 1905 goda). During New Year's. A whole city block under the eyes of Lenin made out of ice. On the central Square of 1905.

 
Tourism:
 
All the touristic options of the city may be divided in the following way:
- Common city-tours. The overview of the city with memorials of the XIX century, Soviet architecture and modern buildings.
- Sacral places tours, related with the last days of the Imperial family - Church on the Blood and Ganina hole
- Soviet monuments in the Constructivism style – Uralmash district
- Mining, stone cutting, gold-mining
- Tours to Europe-Asian frontier
- Mounting tourism started developing in Ural back in Soviet era. There are a lot of ski stations and resorts, fully equipped, with all condition for a great vacation.
 
Culture:
 
The city has several dozens of libraries including the V. G. Belinsky Scientific Library, the largest public library in the Urals.
 
Yekaterinburg is famous for its theaters among which there are some very popular theater companies: car rental Yekaterinburg, hotels Yekaterinburg, sights of YekaterinburgYekaterinburg Academic Ballet and Opera Company, Sverdlovsk Academic Theater of Musical Comedy (legendary company known in Russia and in ex-soviet republics as Sverdlovskaya muzkomedia), Yekaterinburg Academic Dramatic Theater, Yekaterinburg Theater for Young Spectators, Volkhonka (popular chamber theater), Kolyada Theater (chamber theater founded by Russian playwright, producer and actor Nikolai Kolyada). Yekaterinburg is the center of New Drama - movement of contemporary Russian playwrights: Nikolai Kolyada, Vasily Sigarev, Konstantin Kostenko, Presnyakov brothers, Oleg Bogayev.
 
Yekaterinburg is also often called capital of contemporary dance for a number of famous contemporary dance companies residing in the city: Kipling, Provincial Dances, Tantstrest with a special department of contemporary dance at the Yekaterinburg University of Humanities.
 
A number of popular Russian rock bands, such as Urfin Dzhyus, Chayf, Chicherina, Nautilus Pompilius, Nastya, Trek, Agata Kristi and Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii, were originally formed in Yekaterinburg (Ural Rock is often considered as a particular variety of the rock music, Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg are considered to be the main centers of rock music in Russia). Besides some famous opera singers - Boris Shtokolov, Yury Gulyayev, Vera short term rent Yekaterinburg, entertainment YekaterinburgBayeva - graduated from the Urals State Conservatory. The Ural Philharmonic Orchestra (current conductor - Dmitry Liss) founded by Mark Paverman and located in Yekaterinburg is also very popular in Russia and in Europe as well as the Ural Academic Popular Chorus - famous folklor singigng and dance ensemble.
 
In Yekaterinburg there are more than 30 museums, among which: several museums of ural minerals and jewellery, some art galleries, one of the largest collections of Kasli mouldings (traditional kind of cast-iron sculpture in the Urals), the famous Shigirskaya Kladovaya (Øèãèðñêàÿ êëàäîâàÿ) - Shigir Collection including the oldest wood sculpture in the world - the Shigir Idol found near Nevyansk and estimated to be made about 9,000 years ago).
 
In Yekaterinburg, there is one of the tallest incomplete architectural structures in the world, the Yekaterinburg TV Tower.
 
Hotels:
 
There is a broad network of the hotels of all categories, accepting all sorts of guests, summits and delegations. Yekaterinburg is the third Russian city by the number of rooms in hotels – 7315 (beginning 2009). On our portal you may also find and filter hotels of the city.

Transport:
 
Yekaterinburg, still called by its Soviet name Sverdlovsk in rail timetables, is an important railway junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway, with lines radiating to all parts of the Urals and the rest of Russia. As the economy grew stronger after the slump of the 1990s, several European airlines started or resumed flying to the city's Koltsovo International Airport (SVX). These include Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Malév, Austrian Airlines, Czech Airlines and Finnair.
 
Yekaterinburg is also served by the smaller Yekaterinburg Aramil Airport.
 
You may also rent all types of cars and buses.
 
Yekaterinburg's public transit network includes the Yekaterinburg Metro which was opened in 1991, and many streetcar (tram), bus, trolleybus, and Marshrutka routes.
