Historical hotels of Moscow and St. Petersburg
In Moscow and St. Petersburg, cities rich in architectural monuments, important historical events and great historical figures, one may find some hotels marked with the seal of historical glory. For lovers of traditions and old times it’s an ideal option of interesting and cal m vacation.
“Sovetskiy” historical hotel, Moscow Closed restaurant “Yar” came back to life in 1952. With a new name of “Sovetskiy” and, following the order of Stalin, it got an addition – hotel complex in “Russian empire” style. This hotel-restaurant was considered governmental in Soviet epoch, and now its glory has been reborn in a new embodiment. In different periods it saw Stalin and his son Vasiliy, M. Thatcher, K. Adenauer, I. Gandy, king of Spain Juan Carlos, V. Vysotskiy and M. Vladi, M. Matieu, C. Norris, A. Shwartzenegger, C. de Burg. Pierre Cardin stayed in the hotel in October 2003. Soviet flag fluttering on the roof was left on its place, but service acquired European character. Interior has also changed: all rooms have individual style, walls of cabinets and bedrooms are upholsters with tapestry.
Other historical projects are planned in Moscow. Ecological Institute of the city created a project of historical hotels in country estates of “Medvedkovo” and “Vinogradovo” that are going to be reconstructed. On the territory of the former country estate of “Medvedkovo” recreation of a damaged country mansion with 4-star hotel is planned, and “Vinogradovo” is to be turned into a cultural center of “Russian village” with 5-star hotel, similar to a Spanish parador – old estates or castles reconstructed and provided with guest rooms, where historical atmosphere and interior are accurately conserved. Conditions of a Russian gentry’s estate are to be recreated here: décor of the XIX century, Russian cuisine, historical park all around wi th forest and pond system.
St. Petersburg, which can boast with no less glorious past, than Moscow, is also trying to follow historical trend in hotel business. For example, lovers of old times may stay in “Schastlivyi Pushkin” hotel located in the very center of St. Petersburg, next to Isaakievskaya and Dvortsovaya squares. That building was chosen by Pushkin to spend the first months of his marriage (1831-1832). Hotel represents the atmosphere of the epoch with its interior and character. Address: 53, Galernaya st. Another interesting place located in the town of Pushkin, where the studies of the great poet took place, is “Ekaterina” hotel. It’s a part of Ekaterininskiy palace and park complex and bears the imperial spirit. Connoisseurs of the Silver Age may stay in ‘Zolotaya Seredina” hotel, located in the historical center of the city, close to Bronze Rider statue.
